Our Story

Katya's Side:

I've always been a bit of a birthday diva, so of course I had to go all out for my golden year (29 on the 29th). I wore all gold and had a huge birthday dinner with girlfriends at Kyma (think sparklers and dancing at the tables) followed by an after party at the Georgia Room in NYC. On a last minute whim, I decided to invite a few coworkers to the after party. Little did I know this would turn out to be the best decision I ever made!! My coworker Miller invited her roommate who invited her friend Julie who invited her friend Sean who invited John. I had no idea Miller had also just met John that night until way later. John immediately caught my eye when he walked in and despite me trying to play it super cool and hard to get, to my horror, I later discovered that my other coworker Dan was NOT playing it cool after I slipped to him I thought John was cute and he started meddling (see John's story below).

Fortunately, I didn't need to worry as sparks flew quickly (peep our first photo together that night below) and all the nerves dropped once we realized we both went to U of R, making it so much easier to connect. Although we didn't know each other at school, we had several mutual friends and come to find out later had even gone to the same parties without knowing it. At the end of the night we went on a long walk and bonded over our love of skiing, travel, and our aversion to owning pets (for the time being)! I was on cloud 9 and really hoped it wasn't too good to be true. A week later we went on our first date for tacos at Tacombi and it was a huge relief to feel our connection only strengthen.

John's Side:

Sean hit me up to go out with him and some friends. We ended up meeting some of Julie's friends at a spot in Gramercy. I had no idea it was someone's birthday. Katya was talking to Sean when he pulled me in and said something about her going to the University of Richmond, and asked if I knew her. I didn't, but we started talking, and it felt like we hit it off. Two months into moving to NYC, I was certainly not expecting to meet anyone special.

The night went on, and one of Katya's friends came over to me on the couch and said, "Birthday girl is into you!" — not exactly subtle. But that took the pressure off, and we stayed up late getting to know each other. I wish I could remember everything that was said, but I'm thankful I can remember how I felt — that this was something worth holding on to.

We went on our first date a week later, and it was great, but we talked so much that I barely ate anything. I was nervous that the connection from a week ago was a fluke, and I was clearly sweating. Come to find out, Katya found it endearing. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

The Rest is History:

Following our first date, we were inseparable. Within our first year together, we explored four countries - Denmark, Japan, Mexico, and Italy - and chased powder through the mountains of Hakuba and the Austrian Alps. If travel is supposed to test a couple, it felt like a good sign that we went everywhere so easily together.

On April 24th, 2025, John proposed to Katya at Hacienda de San Antonio in Colima, Mexico (see full proposal story below). A trip that turned out to be a bit more productive than expected. On September 19th, 2025, we made it official at the NYC Courthouse and just a few months later, we welcomed our daughter Sloane on December 30th, 2025. The best whim of our lives turned into the beginning of a family.

We are so grateful for the incredible memories we've made over the last few years, and we can't wait to celebrate our love with all of you in Mexico City this year!

The Proposal

April 24, 2025

Katya's POV:

John planned an unforgettable getaway for us at the Hacienda de San Antonio in Colima, Mexico. I was starting to think this trip could be THE TRIP when he texted me a few months before that he wanted to take full reign of the planning process. Historically, I had been the trip planner in the relationship, eagerly crafting detailed itineraries for our getaways, so it was a bit suspicious for John to all of a sudden want to take full reign of this one. We had been floating a Carribean getaway for a while, so when he called me suddenly all excited about this "remote Hacienda in Mexico by a volcano" I was honestly a bit skeptical listening to this change in plans, especially since we had already been to Mexico together. However, the moment I looked up the Hacienda, I immediately got chills and teary eyed as I had never seen a more magical place that just felt so US. It was an immediate yes for me and John took over in getting everything booked.

It was quite the journey to get there as we took a red eye from NYC on Tuesday night, landed early Wednesday morning in Guadalajara, and then drove three hours to Colima. It was so peaceful upon arrival and we were in shock that we almost had the entire Hacienda to ourselves (only saw three other groups our entire stay there)! We spent the rest of the day recovering from the long travel day by soaking up the sun and enjoying the gorgeous views by the pool, margs in hand.

The next morning, I had a strong hunch the big moment was happening as John mentioned he planned a picnic for us that morning (and it was the only pre planned excursion of the weekend)! I was so excited and nervous as we drove out to the picnic site and was blown away by the setup and view upon arrival. Before sitting down, John said he wanted to first say a few things in which I may have blacked out a touch on his speech. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring that was a complete surprise to me! With tears of joy, I couldn't say yes fast enough.

Despite me having a hunch the proposal could be happening that morning, I was in SHOCK once John told me he had snuck a day trip out to Dallas to ask for my parents' blessing. I was also shocked when I realized there were photographers in the background capturing the whole moment! John had always been adamant about having a private, photo-less proposal, so I had already accepted that the moment wouldn't be captured whenever it happened. Needless to say, it was such a lovely surprise for him to change his sentiment on photographers and hire them to capture it all. We had a photoshoot afterwards, and an entire pack of horses came all the way up to us (pics below)! The photographers said in all their years at the hacienda, they'd never seen the horses come that close before. We saw it as a great omen for the rest of our future together.
